In breaking news on Friday, several journalists broke the news that Liverpool had a bid off below £120m rejected for Alexander Isak.

Newcastle United have maintained their stance all summer that the former Real Socied striker is not for sale but Isak reportedly informed the club that he would be leaving this summer before the end of the 2024/25 season.

Now, with the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season just two weeks from beginning with an Anfield meeting between Liverpool and Bournemouth, the pressure is on for a deal to be agreed.

It’s very clear that Liverpool want Isak and Isak wants Liverpool but the Reds’ opening bid doesn’t come close to the reported £150m valuation that Newcastle have set.

Latest on Liverpool’s opening bid for Isak

Liverpool have made their official opening move in what has been a summer-long saga but does now seem to be coming to a head.

According to Paul Joyce of the Times, “Newcastle United have rejected a formal offer from Liverpool for Alexander Isak after the Premier League champions’ bid fell significantly short of their £150million valuation.

“It is believed the opening offer was less than the £120million that the Liverpool sporting director, Richard Hughes, had previously indicated the club was prepared to pay when making informal contact with Newcastle almost two weeks ago.”

Joyce writes that because Liverpool have now made a formal bid, it represents a step towards signing Isak, “demonstrating their desire to land the Sweden international and reflects the encouragement they have received from the camp of the player.”

Despite two attempts from Newcastle, Isak is not interested in signing a new contract with the Magpies and has his eyes firmly set on signing for Liverpool this summer.

Arne Slot is forming a truly formidable squad that has already added talent like Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez to a side that lifted the Premier League title last season.

For a team that recently extended terms for legends Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, this summer has been a statement of intent and one that could only become more impressive should Isak move to Anfield.
