There has been “zero progress” regarding a new contract for Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate, according to reliable journalist Lewis Steele.

The 25-year-old has become such an important player for the Reds, not always making as many headlines as Virgil van Dijk, but playing with increasing levels of maturity.

While Konate has been dogged by injury problems during his time at Liverpool, this season has been his most productive yet, with 26 starts coming his way in the Premier League.

The Frenchman is out of contract at Anfield in the summer of 2026, though, so there has to be focus on sorting an extension for him as soon as possible, in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year.

According to The Daily Mail‘s Steele, there has been “zero progress” regarding Konate’s situation, however, which is a concern, amid doubts over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future.

Konate a huge long-term player for Liverpool

While this update doesn’t mean Konate is leaving – far from it – there has been reported interest from Paris Saint-Germain, so Liverpool must act fast and make their centre-back feel wanted.

At 25, the France international still has so much of his career ahead of him, and Van Dijk knows exactly how good his teammate is, saying of him earlier this season:

“I think we need everyone to be at their best. He is a fantastic player who still can be better. As you saw, he is important with the goal, he is defensively solid, a bit unlucky with the goal we conceded, but obviously the qualities he has are outstanding in my opinion.

“He is learning, growing, getting better and looking after himself much better in order to be ready every three days as that’s what asked. And also we have a young player behind him in Jarrell, who is also doing well. We have to keep pushing each other and he is doing a good job.”

A new centre-back who can push Konate for minutes is needed in the summer transfer window, but he is a huge player moving forward, and if he can stay injury-free, he can lead Liverpool’s defence long after Van Dijk has gone.
