Liverpool striker Alexander Isak is expected to return to full training this week after a long injury absence, according to reliable journalist Paul Joyce.
Isak made the move to Anfield last summer, becoming the most expensive signing in Reds history after wrestling him away from Newcastle United.
Unfortunately, it has been a disappointing first season at Liverpool for the Swede, though, having begun the campaign short of match fitness, looking a far cry from the world-class player we have seen in recent years.
Then, just as Isak looked to be finding his feet, he suffered a broken leg while scoring away to Tottenham in the Premier League just before Christmas.
According to The Times‘ Joyce, the 26-year-old is now set to return to the fold properly this week, prior to Liverpool’s trip to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday lunchtime.
He had been running on the grass before the current international break, but he is now going to make a significant step forward n his recovery.
Can Alexander Isak enjoy an inspired end to the season?
As mentioned, Isak hasn’t got going at all yet for Liverpool, but he is a special striker who has been lauded by so many in the past, not least Newcastle legend Alan Shearer:
“His whole game is really, really top notch. His runs are superb. If you just watch how clever he is when he doesn’t get the first pass played in, he then goes behind a defender to come back in and bend his run to make sure that he is onside, then he can make a really clever finish.”
While Isak is unlikely to find his best form between now and the end of the season, given the severity of his injury, he will hopefully still be able to make a big impact.
The dream scenario is that he replicates Djibril Cisse from back in 2004/25, with the Frenchman breaking his leg earlier in the season, before winning the Champions League and scoring a penalty in the shootout.
Having Isak back is an enormous boost, taking some pressure off Hugo Ekitike, and the hope is that the inspired the Reds across three different competitions.
