Peter Schmeichel has praised one Liverpool player in particular after their 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, insisting that his performance stood out despite the result going against Arne Slot’s side at Old Trafford.
Liverpool were beaten in a dramatic Premier League clash that swung back and forth, with the Reds fighting from two goals down before ultimately falling short in the closing stages.
Even in defeat, however, there were individual performances that drew strong praise from former players and pundits.

Schmeichel highlights Szoboszlai’s influence
The former Manchester United goalkeeper was particularly impressed with Dominik Szoboszlai, who once again played a central role in Liverpool’s attacking phases and midfield control.
Schmeichel described the Hungarian’s contribution as exceptional, saying he was “absolutely fantastic” during periods of the match where Liverpool were at their best.
He said on The Good, The Bad & The Football: “The thing about Liverpool yesterday was, Szoboszlai was absolutely fantastic for them.
“For as long as he had the energy to do it, they played well, then he started to tire out, and this was a good thing for us. But to come back and do what they did, and I just loved the fact that Kobbie got the goal.”
Liverpool’s response after going behind was sparked by increased intensity in midfield, with Szoboszlai heavily involved in pressing, ball progression, and linking play between defence and attack.
His movement between the lines created problems for Manchester United, helping Liverpool shift momentum and force their way back into contention.
Even as the game opened up in the second half, Szoboszlai remained one of Liverpool’s most consistent outlets in possession, repeatedly carrying the ball into advanced areas and supporting attacking transitions.
Defeat overshadows strong individual display
Despite Szoboszlai’s influence, Liverpool were unable to complete the comeback and ultimately left Old Trafford empty-handed after conceding a decisive late goal.
The result added to a frustrating run of inconsistent performances for Arne Slot’s side in high-profile fixtures, where individual moments have often decided matches.
However, the performance provided one of the clearer positives from the contest, particularly in a game where Liverpool struggled for control during the opening stages.
Szoboszlai’s display once again highlighted his importance within Slot’s system, with the midfielder continuing to establish himself as one of Liverpool’s most reliable performers in both domestic and European matches.
His ability to combine work rate with attacking output has made him a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield structure, especially in games where intensity and physical output are crucial.
