Phil Thompson is impressed by Liverpool’s transfer activity so far this summer with Arne Slot overseeing one of the best windows in Premier League history from the Reds.

That is, of course, if Liverpool complete deals to sign Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez as expected.

As things stand, Slot has signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and is a few steps away from adding Wirtz and Kerkez to his squad.

There are expected to be several outgoings this summer, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Kostas Tsimikas and Darwin Nunez while Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are not guaranteed to stay either.

One way or another, Liverpool are going to have a very interesting squad for next season.

With Liverpool potentially set to spend over £200m this summer on new players before potential sales balance the books, it’s no surprise that there are a lot of opinions doing the rounds.

One of the latest to wade into the conversation is Liverpool legend Phil Thompson, who says Wirtz will have been on Slot’s mind all season when the Reds battled to break down some of the more defensively resolute sides like Nottingham Forest.

“It is nice that Liverpool is searching for players in the right area,” Thompson said live on talkSPORT. “Sometimes clubs go and get players just because they are available, not because they fit into your structure.

“Andy Robertson will give Milos Kerkez a good fight for that left-back spot but Kerkez has got youth on his side. He is a lot quicker. And Wirtz is a proper player.

“He looks a bit of a cross between Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino. He has got that ability to get in between the lines and into great areas.

“It is actually one of those areas where Liverpool struggled last season against packed defences. We did do eventually but I think Arne Slot is looking for that player who can break defenses and down and also score goals.”
