Liverpool are one of the clubs that could sign Real Madrid forward Rodrygo this summer as claims suggest the Brazilian is now ready to leave the Spanish capital.
Owners FSG extended Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s contracts a couple weeks ago and now that the Premier League title is in the bag, attention is turning to how Arne Slot will upgrade his squad.
There are a number of players expected to leave this summer while several will be signed if reports are to be believed. Many have fantasised about seeing Alexander Isak join the club but that remains a far-fetched dream given Newcastle United want £150m to part ways with the Swede.
If Liverpool cannot have Isak, then Rodrygo would be one of the best options the Reds could consider after they failed to sign him during his Santos days.
Spanish press reports that Rodrygo could soon be on the market
Spanish news outlet Radio MARCA reports that with Rodrygo going through “his toughest time” at Madrid and has reportedly “been locked away in his house thinking about his future.”
Rodrygo is considering leaving Real Madrid and MARCA report that he “has been thinking for a few months that his time at Real Madrid is coming to an end.”
The forward apparently does not feel valued amid the emergence of the trio of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe.
One factor that could see Rodrygo stay at the club is if Xabi Alonso personally asks him to stay when he takes over from Carlo Ancelotti in the summer.
Liverpool tried to sign Rodrygo when he was at Santos
Before he made the move to Madrid, Rodrygo was subject to interest from a whole host of European clubs, including Liverpool. He actually very nearly joined the Reds.
“We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to,” he told The Guardian in April 2024. “I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good. The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football.
“It had always been my dream to play in Europe. Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder. I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true, I almost went to Liverpool.”
