Arne Slot has provided an important update regarding the fitness of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, admitting the Brazilian is “progressing well.”
The Reds head to Arsenal for a massive Premier League game on Sunday afternoon, knowing that victory will put them seven points ahead of the Gunners.
Slot has certain injury problems to contend with heading into the match, however, with Alisson and Harvey Elliott definitely out of the weekend action.
Diogo Jota is also a key absentee after suffering a rib injury in last Sunday’s 1-0 win away to Chelsea, while there are also doubts surrounding the availability of Conor Bradley and Federico Chiesa.
“He’s progressing well, like we expect. But it’s not a short-term recovery. It’s always difficult to judge him. I think the best way to judge an injury is in the end of an injury, the end phase of his rehab, and he’s not there yet.
“I can’t tell you how much longer he will be out, but don’t expect him to be in against Brighton in the cup or next week.”
Our thoughts on this latest Alisson injury update…
This certainly represents a positive update regarding Alisson, even though Liverpool supporters shouldn’t expect him to return too soon, potentially not until after next month’s international break.
Thankfully, in Caoimhin Kelleher, the Reds couldn’t ask for a much better deputy between the sticks, with the Irishman such a consistent performer, making a number of important saves in the midweek 1-0 victory away to RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
Alisson’s injuries are becoming a worry, though, with the Brazil international arguably more prone to fitness issues than other ‘keepers, and it is something that the likes of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes need to be aware of.
Hopefully, the 32-year-old remains in Liverpool’s goal for many more years to come, but if the injuries persist, there may be a point when they see Giorgi Mamardashvili as the stronger long-term option.
