Liverpool are in pole position to secure the signing of highly-rated Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer, as Arne Slot looks to add further depth and defensive steel to his squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.

According to Gazete do Urubu via Sport Witness, Liverpool are the “main interested party” in the Brazilian international but will need to contend wit interest from Manchester United. The report says ‘close to Liverpool’ as a potential summer signing takes shape.

With a reported price tag of £50 million, Gomes could become the latest addition to Liverpool’s evolving midfield.

Liverpool’s midfield evolution continues

The Reds revamped their midfield last summer with the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo.

While this overhaul significantly improved the squad, there remains a need for a more natural defensive-minded option, particularly with Endo turning 33 next season.

Gomes, 24, has excelled in a defensive role for Wolves, averaging three tackles per game in the Premier League this season.

His aggressive style, athleticism, and ability to win duels would bring much-needed balance to Liverpool’s midfield, complementing the more attack-minded Mac Allister and Szoboszlai.

Why Gomes could be the perfect fit for Liverpool

Liverpool have historically thrived with high-energy, combative midfielders, and Gomes fits that mould perfectly.

Pundit Sue Smith recently praised his performances, highlighting his physicality, defensive work rate, and ability to distribute the ball effectively.

“He wins the ball back, he’s really tenacious. But then when he’s on the ball, he’s got that quality as well,” Smith noted.

Unlike some oversees signings who take time to adapt, Gomes already has Premier League experience, meaning he could slot into Slot’s system seamlessly.

Additionally, his age makes him an ideal long-term addition as Liverpool continue to build for the future.

With Manchester United also reportedly monitoring Gomes, Liverpool may need to act quickly to secure his signature.

However, with the Reds leading the race and Wolves likely to sell for the right price, this could be a move that makes perfect sense for both club and player.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Liverpool’s midfield may undergo further refinement—and Joao Gomes could be the next key piece in Slot’s new-look side.
