Liverpool reportedly have “reservations” over new signing Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is set to finally move to Anfield in July although he could be loaned out again.
Arne Slot made a very bold move to decide against making significant changes to the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp. Federico Chiesa is the only new addition to the side and he has barely played as it is.
Of course, Klopp did leave the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker behind for Slot to start with. As starting squads go for new Premier League managers, it might be one of the best for a long time.
If anything it’s a nod to what an incredible job Klopp did during his time at the club.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool have been scouting the 24-year-old since the start of 2023 and while they “immediately liked” him, they reportedly hold “reservations” over his distribution.
At Liverpool, Alisson Becker’s calm demeanour on the ball is a huge part of the confidence and dominance they defend with. As many will remember, the effect of poor kicking from Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius on the team was immense.
Alisson’s arrival brought with it an immediate increase in quality in distribution from the back.
At Valencia, Mamardashvili is going through a training plan specifically geared towards improving his ability on the ball.
Supposedly, insiders have remarked at the “steady improvement” the goalkeeper has made but only time will tell if it’s enough to warrant a spot at the club next season.
Beyond his targeted training plan, Mamardashvili has also been learning English since the summer to prepare for his move to Anfield.
