Liverpool are on the verge of securing the Premier League title but their search for new signings is already well underway.
Despite Liverpool’s dominance, there is widespread agreement that reinforcements will be needed this summer, particularly with key departures on the horizon.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is reportedly edging closer to a move to Real Madrid, and midfield reinforcements are also on the club’s agenda.
Liverpool were in the market for Martin Zubimendi but the Spaniard rejected them which led to Ryan Gravenberch being trusted in the no.6 role.
However, squad depth remains an issue as damaging defeats in the FA Cup, Champions League and Carabao Cup proved.
Liverpool reignite interest in Nicolo Rovella
One name back on Liverpool’s radar is Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella. According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Lazio Press), the Reds could renew their pursuit of the Italian international after initially considering him in January.
Lazio are reportedly open to selling Rovella for around €40m (£34m), with the 22-year-old playing a crucial role for the Serie A side this season, having started all but five league matches.
Liverpool’s interest in Rovella has resurfaced at a time when their midfield targets are shifting. The club appears set to miss out on Martin Zubimendi, who is expected to join Arsenal after previously rejecting a move to Anfield last year.
A perfect rotation midfielder for Slot
One of the primary concerns from Slot’s debut campaign has been the lack of squad rotation, particularly in midfield. Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have been the Dutch manager’s preferred duo when available, leaving Liverpool’s depth underutilised.
Rovella could offer the perfect solution. A versatile midfielder who began his career as a deep-lying regista before evolving into a more dynamic, all-action player, the Lazio star possesses the adaptability that would make him a valuable asset at Anfield.
Described by Luciano Spalletti in 2022 as “wonderful“, Liverpool signing the 23-year-old could be another astute move for a player about to enter his prime years.
As Liverpool prepare for their title defence next season, adding depth and quality in midfield will be crucial.
Rovella’s ability to operate in multiple roles makes him an ideal candidate to bolster the squad, providing Slot with greater flexibility as he looks to build upon a successful first campaign.
