Liverpool are rumoured to be considering making a big offer for an “unplayable” star who has been linked with the Reds plenty of times in the past.
According to a report from Spain, the Merseysiders are still interested in signing Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella, and are willing to table a £66.6m offer for his services.
It looks as though Arne Slot still sees the importance of adding to his options in the middle of the park, with some feeling that they are slightly short in that area, especially in terms of an out-and-out No.6.
Barella isn’t that type of player, in truth, but much like Alexis Mac Allister, his versatility allows him to excel in deeper or more attack-minded midfield roles.
The Inter ace has been described as “unplayable” by Gazzetta dello Sport in the past, while Jurgen Klopp once said of him back in 2022:
“He’s a really good player, a really good player and I like him a lot. He has all the things you want from a midfield player: he is aggressive, he is technical, he can run for ages and all these kinds of things. That’s a top-class player.”
Barella is now a hugely experienced player at the highest level, not only making a sizeable 240 appearances for reigning Serie A champions Inter but also winning 57 caps for Italy, scoring 10 times for good measure.
At 27, the midfield maestro is also still right in and around the peak of his powers, too, so Liverpool wouldn’t be signing an ageing figure whose best days are behind him.
Some would argue that such a large amount of money could be spent elsewhere, such as on long-term replacements for the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson, but if Michael Edwards, Richard Hughes and Slot feel another midfield gem is essential, they need to be trusted.
Whether Barella is happy to leave Inter remains to be seen, and his current deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2029, meaning the Serie A giants will be in no rush to let him go.
