Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has reportedly “picked up the phone” to try and sign Chelsea winger Estevao at the end of the transfer window.
Reds head coach Andoni Iraola knows the importance of the club making some late-summer signings before Tuesday evening, stressing as much last week:
“I have in my head what I want, we’ve been talking since the beginning with the club, they know what we want. It’s about closing the deals. There are certain things we can but it’s true we need players in the wide areas. I’m sure if we can improve other areas we will but I don’t know how the market is going to finish.
“I have to be patient as well as you. It’s very uncomfortable for me as you are dealing with uncertainties all the time. In four or five days we will know what we have and then we can make proper plans.”
According to a respected source on X, Hughes is trying to seal a last-gasp deal for Chelsea star Estavao, with another call potentially happening on Monday:
“Richard Hughes picked up the phone tonight. LFC sporting director went straight to Chelsea. One question. One name. Estesvao. He wanted to know if the Brazilian is available. Chelsea’s answer was ice-cold: ‘Call back tomorrow'”.
Estevao could light up Anfield in a Liverpool shirt for years
Liverpool simply must make a couple more wide signings on top of Bradley Barcola, with Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr strongly linked with moves.
But Estavao could be a fantastic alternative option for the Reds, having produced his Brazilian flair in a Chelsea shirt, and been hailed by Selecao manager Carlo Ancelotti:
“Estevao has an incredible amount of talent. It’s a surprise this level at his age. He’s good at finishing, has a lot of magic, and he works very hard. I can say this: with Estevao, Brazil have a guaranteed future.”
Estevao feels less likely than Minteh and Sarr as things stand, but signing him would arguably be the bigger coup for Liverpool, with the 19-year-old a player with a huge future in the game.
