Robert Lewandowski has expressed confidence that Liverpool still have a genuine chance of winning this season’s Champions League, despite their current challenges in the competition.

Liverpool’s European campaign is hanging in the balance after a 1-0 defeat in the first leg against Galatasaray, leaving them with work to do in the return fixture. The situation has made many supporters uneasy, particularly given the difficulty of their side of the draw. However, Lewandowski appears far more optimistic about their prospects than some fans.

Speaking in a conversation with Brazilian legend Romario, the Barcelona striker made it clear that he still views Liverpool as one of Europe’s elite sides. In his assessment of the tournament contenders, he grouped the Reds alongside several heavyweights.

“I think that Arsenal, Bayern Munich of course, Liverpool is very strong still I think,” Lewandowski said.

His comments highlight the respect Liverpool continue to command on the continental stage, even during a period of inconsistency. While their domestic form and recent performances may raise doubts, their overall quality and experience in big European nights still make them dangerous opponents.

Lewandowski also pointed out how unpredictable the Champions League can be, emphasising that even the biggest clashes can swing either way. “Manchester City also, it’s one game against Real Madrid, you never know what will happen,” he added.

He ultimately grouped several top clubs together as realistic contenders for the trophy, reinforcing the idea that the competition remains wide open. Continuing, Lewandowski said: “All of these big clubs, you can say they’re favourites to win the Champions League.”

Interestingly, Lewandowski did not include his own team, Barcelona, or current holders PSG among his main picks. That omission adds further intrigue, especially as Liverpool could potentially face PSG if they progress past Galatasaray.

For now, Liverpool’s immediate focus remains on overturning their first-leg deficit. While scepticism persists among supporters, Lewandowski’s remarks serve as a reminder that belief from outside the club remains strong, and in a competition known for dramatic turnarounds, their hopes are far from over.
