There is a “serious possibility” that Saudi Pro League clubs “will be back” for Darwin Nunez, says Fabrizio Romano, as the Uruguayan striker goes through the most difficult period of his career.

This week has potentially been the worst in Darwin Nunez’s Anfield career as evidenced by his post on social media after missing the crucial chance in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa. He was vilified online and Arne Slot admitted he’s worried about his body language as his future seems to point to a move away more and more.

Nunez has been an entertaining player to watch and it’s a real pity he hasn’t made it work so far because it’s painfully clear how talented he is but decision making and bad misses in front of goal have coloured his time at the club.

Liverpool rejected two offers from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in the January transfer window, according to a claim from Fabrizio Romano earlier this month. Their second bid was reportedly worth £62.4 million, plus add-ons.

The Saudi Pro League outfit were also prepared to pay a mouth-watering sum which would have dwarfed the £120,000 a week he earns at Liverpool. According to the Telegraph‘s Mike McGrath, Al—Hilal were ready to pay Nunez “around £29 million per year” or the weekly equivalent of £558,000 a week.

Fabrizio Romano reports Saudi clubs will return for Darwin Nunez in the summer

Although Liverpool rejected an offer just shy of the initial sum they paid to sign him from Benfica, Darwin Nunez may get his chance to move to Saudi Arabia in the summer with Fabrizio Romano now claiming that Saudi Pro League teams will once again compete for his signature.

Reporting for Give Me Sport, Romano said: “I keep saying that I expect Darwin to leave in the summer, it’s a serious possibility. Saudi clubs will be back but there could be European clubs also keen, so let’s wait and see.”

When the summer window opens, Nunez will have three years remaining on his Liverpool contract so FSG will be able to negotiate a high fee with Saudi or European teams. It would be a sad end to what may have been a bright career on Merseyside but it would provide Arne Slot with needed funds to transform Liverpool into the team he envisions.

It’s unclear what that will be just yet. Luis Diaz has been shoehorned into a false nine role to accommodate Cody Gakpo on the wing and neither Nunez or Diogo Jota have made the no.9 role their own yet.
