A new update has emerged regarding Arne Slot’s Liverpool future and a potential contract extension, courtesy of former CEO Keith Wyness.

The Reds lost yet again on Wednesday evening, with a much-changed starting lineup losing 3-0 at home to Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Slot received criticism from some for going too weak with his team, and for throwing youngsters under the bus, with the pressure on Liverpool’s head coach mounting.

Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness claimed that the Dutchman’s job isn’t under genuine threat, but negotiations over a new have been put on hold:

“We’ve been talking about Slot’s contract renegotiation and how those things can often slow down. Well, reports are coming out that negotiations have been put on hold. He will know himself, he’s not in a great position to negotiate a new contract at this moment. I think that’s as far as it would go though. I don’t think there’s any real pressure on him at the moment.

“If this bad form in the Premier League were to carry on for another four games, then I think we might see some sort of real concern. Look, there’s quality in that squad, and he’s got to get them firing.  It’s not a terminal problem, and I think they can get it right, and you would expect them to turn it around. I don’t think there’s an issue. I think it’s a blip and I expect them, as I say, to start to get in some form.

“Those quality players do have to hit their stride, and if Salah can start to show some sort of form, that’s the way through it, I’m sure, for Slot.”

A defining week for Slot at Liverpool

Few could have predicted Slot being under such pressure back in the summer, having won the Premier League title in his first season in charge.

Liverpool’s form in October has been disastrous, though, and their boss faces a huge week of games against Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Manchester City, with the first two matches at Anfield.

If the Reds were to lose all three, it would be nine defeats out of 10 in all competitions, at which point there would sadly have to be genuine discussions over Slot’s future.

One or two positive results in those fixtures, or all three hopefully, would completely ease the heat on him, though, so it feels like a defining week or so.
