Liverpool fans may not have to wait much longer for the announcement they’ve been dreaming of. The Reds are increasingly confident they’ll soon tie down Mohamed Salah to a blockbuster new contract that will extend the Egyptian King’s unforgettable Anfield career through to 2027.
That optimism comes on the back of major new updates from two trusted sources, which also include positive news on Virgil van Dijk’s future.
With Salah, van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold all currently set to become free agents on July 1st, the pressure has been mounting on FSG to secure new deals for the trio.
While Trent’s future seems to lead to Spain, with reports suggesting he is set to join Real Madrid in the summer, hopes remain high that both Salah and van Dijk will extend their contracts to remain at Anfield.
Salah has “reached an agreement in principle” with Liverpool
According to Sky Sports Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Salah has now reached “an agreement in principle” with Liverpool to extend his contract until June 2027.
Tavolieri reports that negotiations were lengthy, with the final sticking point being the length of the deal. But after some back and forth, Liverpool are understood to have relented to Salah’s demands for a two-year extension, while the player compromised slightly on wages to get the deal done.
Despite continuous interest from Saudi Arabia, Salah has reportedly turned down a massive offer from to join the Saudi Pro League – reaffirming his desire to remain on Merseyside, a place he now considers home.
“Salah does not see himself anywhere except on the banks of the Mersey,” Tavolieri reports.
Under the new terms, Salah would earn around £35.36 million over two years, translating to roughly £340,000 per week. It would also mean he would be the highest earner in the league.
Van Dijk contract talks going smoothly with some “progress”
Meanwhile, fans can also breathe easier about Virgil van Dijk’s future, with David Ornstein providing a promising update on the Dutch captain’s situation as well.
Speaking on NBC Sports, Ornstein confirmed that Van Dijk himself had recently spoken publicly about “progress” in contract negotiations, and Liverpool insiders share that optimism.
“It’s been my understanding throughout that Liverpool are confident, optimistic of renewing Van Dijk,” Ornstein said. “Now it’s a case of when rather than if he will put pen to paper, barring any last-minute hitches.”
Ornstein described the negotiations as “positive and cordial”, suggesting a resolution is near.
He added: “It’s the same situation with Mohamed Salah. Liverpool have been confident throughout that they will retain his services… it’s more a case of when rather than if that is going to happen now. That will be really good news for them.”
Fans will breathe again when Liverpool confirm reports
Liverpool fans remain hopeful of seeing van Dijk and Salah stay but after it emerged that Trent is leaving, fears over losing all three players also remain.
It would be so damaging to lose the trio a year after saying goodbye to Jurgen Klopp.
And with the Reds set to lift the Premier League title, celebrations would be bittersweet.
