Steven Gerrard has admitted there is one midfielder he would have loved to see Liverpool sign during the 2023 transfer window, reflecting on what might have strengthened the squad.
That summer marked a major rebuild in midfield, with several new arrivals brought in to refresh the team. While the changes addressed key issues, Gerrard believes there was still one player who could have elevated the group even further.
Speaking about the situation, he made his feelings clear. “There’s one I really wish Liverpool had signed,” Gerrard said.
Although he acknowledged the quality of the players who did arrive, Gerrard suggested that this particular midfielder possessed attributes that would have perfectly complemented Liverpool’s style.
His comments highlight the ongoing debate about recruitment decisions and how small differences can have a big impact over time. Even with a strong squad, missing out on the right profile can leave a gap that becomes more noticeable as the season unfolds.
Gerrard also pointed to the importance of balance in midfield, emphasizing how certain players can bring qualities that others may lack. “He would have given them something different,” he added.
“He’s going from strength to strength. I think he’s one of the best in the world. I think he has become one of the best in the world.
“It was a fantastic move for him. I wish we [Liverpool] signed him here, actually. West Ham did a great job under David Moyes, I think David Moyes has really schooled him in how to play the position tactically.
“His confidence from playing well for England and being around that group of players, he’s just gone to the next level now at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta.”
That “something different” is often what separates good teams from great ones. Whether it’s creativity, control, or the ability to dictate the tempo of a game.
While it’s impossible to know how things would have played out, Gerrard’s remarks offer an interesting perspective on Liverpool’s recent transfer strategy. Recruitment is rarely perfect, and even the best-run clubs have moments where they look back and wonder what could have been.
For now, Liverpool must focus on getting the most out of their current options. However, Gerrard’s comments serve as a reminder that the right addition at the right time can make all the difference in shaping a team’s success.
