After storming to promotion the previous season Newcastle were relative newcomers to the Premier League. After a tentative start the Magpies got into their groove and slowly but surely climbed the table much to the surprise of everyone in the league. The combination of Andy Cole and Peter Beardsley proved to be devastating with the duo contributing 65 goals between them as the Toon Army finished third in their first top flight campaign. Cole scored a record 41 goals in all competitions that season as Kevin Keegans Entertainers were born.
