There has never quite been a player that’s encapsulated an England manager’s time quite as well as Carlton Palmer. Part of Graham Taylor’s policy to pretty much give everyone in the top flight a go at international football, every second touch was a tackle with poor old Carlton, who looked unsure as to what he was really doing there himself. So out of his depth it beggars belief.
