Interestingly, all of Mills’ caps were won away from Wembley, a record for a player in the modern era. Mills went to the 2002 World Cup in place of the injured Gary Neville. His passion for the cause was notable and he put in a good shift in the quarter-final against Brazil, memorably being forced to trot back 40 yards and put the corner flag back in its hole. But all the passion and effort in the world still saw Milles fall way short of international class.
