Liverpool are one of the clubs dreaming of recruiting Alexander Isak this summer but unsurprisingly, they are not prepared to spend £150m to bring him to Anfield.
The 1-0 win over Leicester City means that Liverpool just need one more win to secure the 2024/25 Premier League title. However, victory over the Foxes underlined the need for new attacking impetus in Arne Slot’s squad.
Liverpool took 28 shots at goal on Sunday but needed a worldie winner from Trent Alexander-Arnold to win the game and it’s part of a bigger pattern.
Whenever Mohamed Salah isn’t firing at a prolific rate, there is very little help from his attacking colleagues.
Someone like Isak would certainly change that but Liverpool are not entertaining the idea of a £150m fee.
The one thing that would make Liverpool enter the race to sign Isak this summer
In order for Liverpool to sign Alexander Isak, they need Newcastle United to lower their asking price. £150m is the rumoured fee the Toons are looking for but FSG will simply not pay that much.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Reds are also looking at Hugo Ekitike and Joao Pedro.
Jacobs said on GiveMeSport’s Market Madness show: “With Liverpool, I’m hearing they’re not going to drop £150 million for Isak. But they’ll bid if he becomes genuinely available at a lower number. But they also love Hugo Ekitike and Joao Pedro.
“Nobody [all of Isak’s suitors] feels like Newcastle’s position is going to change now. Let’s see in June. Let’s see in the final weeks of the window towards September if anything changes but right now, all of these teams, Liverpool included have other targets because it’s not apparent that Isak will become genuinely available.”
Spending £100m+ on a striker will greatly shortchange Liverpool’s squad plans
Even if Isak becomes available at £100m or thereabouts, is that too much to expect Liverpool to pay given there are several areas of the squad that also need investment?
Even though Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are staying, the jury is out on the prospects of Alexander-Arnold staying. Meanwhile, Darwin Nunez is all but out the door and Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have also been linked with exits of their own.
Isak is a dream signing but so long as Salah is at the club, Liverpool don’t need to break the bank even if Salah does need a greater measure of attacking talent to play with.
