Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has confirmed there has been “progress” in negotiations over a new contract, easing concerns over the Dutchman’s future as he nears the final months of his current deal.
The 33-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, and while speculation has swirled in recent months regarding the long-term plans for van Dijk and other senior figures like Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the towering centre-back offered a more optimistic update after Liverpool’s narrow 3-2 defeat to Fulham on Sunday.
“There is progress, yeah,” van Dijk told reporters. “I don’t know [if I’ll stay], we’ll see. These are internal discussions, and we’ll see.
“I love the club, I love the fans, and they were there for us again – we wanted to reward them. I want them to be there on Sunday again and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.”
While the loss at Craven Cottage marked only Liverpool’s second league defeat of the season, the Reds still boast an 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League and remain firmly in control of the title race under Arne Slot.

Reflecting on the performance against Fulham, van Dijk admitted it was a disappointing afternoon by their standards: “It was a poor day at the office for all of us. There were individual moments that should have been dealt with better. It was not acceptable as a team.”
Van Dijk’s potential departure had been a major talking point earlier this year, especially after the defender admitted in March that he had “no idea” whether he would stay beyond the current campaign.
However, the latest comments signal a growing confidence inside Anfield that a new deal will be agreed, keeping the captain in red for the foreseeable future.
Why age is just a number for Van Dijk
The Netherlands international joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million, a then-world-record fee for a defender.

Since then, he has become a defensive icon, amassing 323 appearances, scoring 26 goals, and playing an instrumental role in the club’s modern golden era – winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups.
While van Dijk is now in his 30s, his form and fitness show no signs of decline. In fact, this season under Slot, the Dutchman has looked as commanding and composed as ever – organising the backline, dominating in the air, and maintaining elite passing accuracy.
His performances have consistently demonstrated why he remains one of the best centre-backs in world football, even at 33.
Modern football has seen several elite defenders play at the top level well into their 30s – Thiago Silva, Giorgio Chiellini, and Sergio Ramos to name a few.
Van Dijk’s professionalism, physical condition, and leadership qualities make him invaluable on and off the pitch, and Liverpool are right to keep faith in their captain.

Moreover, his influence in the dressing room and status as a role model for younger defenders like Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konaté further underline his importance. As long as Van Dijk continues performing at this level, age is far from a concern.
With progress now underway in contract talks and the title charge still firmly alive, Liverpool fans can be reassured that the club is working to secure the future of its on-field leader.
All signs point to van Dijk remaining at the heart of Anfield’s defence – and its identity – for years to come.
