Journalist David Lynch has now dropped a huge update regarding Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi on deadline day.
The 25-year-old has been the Reds’ biggest centre-back target throughout the summer transfer window, having become one of the best defenders in the country, also forcing his way into England’s strongest starting XI over the past year or so.
With Alexander Isak closing in on a stunning £130m move to Liverpool, there is also hope that a deal can be struck for Guehi before the window slams shut on Monday evening, too.
Now, Lynch has taken to X to claim that Palace have given Guehi permission to undergo a medical in London, as his switch to Anfield edges closer all the time after agreeing a £35m move there:
“Marc Guehi has been given permission to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to Liverpool.
A massive end to a stunning summer for Liverpool
This is enormous news for anyone of a Liverpool persuasion, with Guehi a fantastic player who has been lauded by Gareth Southgate in the past, following his performances for his country.
“He’s been exceptional. We obviously lose him now for the next game, but he’s a young defender that we’ve had enormous belief in and he’s justified that with his performances in this tournament.”
This has been a summer that was beyond the wildest dreams of Liverpool supporters when it got underway, even though the tragic loss of Diogo Jota back in July still stands out more than anything.
The Reds have brought in both Florian Wirtz and Isak for club-record fees, with the likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike adding more quality to the squad, among others.
Granted, some good players have moved on, from Trent Alexander-Arnold to Luis Diaz, but this feels like Liverpool’s most formidable squad of the Premier League era, with elite options littered all over the pitch.
Arne Slot’s side feel primed to defend their league title, even though it clearly won’t be easy, and Guehi is capable of pushing Ibrahima Konate hard for a starting berth alongside Virgil van Dijk, heading to Anfield at the peak of his powers.
