Football legend has made current Liverpool player the butt of his joke with brutal dig

|

Florian Wirtz’s struggles at Liverpool have been well-documented over the past 12 months, and Germany legend Toni Kroos has aimed a dig in his direction.

The 23-year-old has shown moments of class since joining the Reds, but he has clearly not produced enough quality, with Gary Neville criticising him and Alexander Isak last month:

“The big thing for Liverpool is they’ve got this quarter-of-a-billion-pound front two, Isak and Wirtz and bloody hell, we’ve been kind to them. They’re going to have to start playing sooner or later or else, to be fair, they’re going to get quite a lot of criticism. For a start, they’re too nice, and if you’re going to be nice, you’d better be incredible at football.

“I don’t see the tenacity in Wirtz in particular. I just see a nice player moving around the pitch, not really ever looking like he’s busting a gut to do anything.”
Now, speaking on the Einfach Mal Luppen podcast [via Sport Witness], Kroos produced a sarcastic answer when asked about who he’d have liked to see playing for Germany at the 2026 World Cup: “(Aleksandr) Pavlovic, (Florian) Wirtz, and (Jamal) Musiala.”
It is a clear suggestion that Wirtz and the other players mentioned were invisible at the tournament, and it won’t help turn the tide in the Liverpool’s man favour.

Time for Florian Wirtz to find new gear at Liverpool

Wirtz’s time at Liverpool has been far from disastrous, but after feeling his way into the Premier League for a year, now is the time when he has to go up a level.

Worryingly, nothing seems to have changed for him from last season, despite Andoni Iraola replacing Arne Slot, and he needs to show more character in games, taking control of them and showing why he is seen as one of Europe’s best attacking players.

It can be that some footballers simply don’t suit the English game, but it would be a huge shame if that proved to be the case with Wirtz, especially as plenty of diminutive creative forces have excelled in it in the past, from Gianfranco Zola to David Silva.

Wirtz has to become Liverpool’s talisman in the final third, starting with Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth, which is the type of match he has been ineffective in far too often.
