The Dutchman has an impressive managerial record, winning the treble with PSV in 1988 to establish them alongside Ajax. Since then his South Korea side exceeded all expectations to finish fourth at the 2002 World Cup, took Champions League also-rans PSV to the semi-finals in 2005, the last four of Euro 2008 with Russia and claimed an FA Cup winner’s medal during a three-month spell at Chelsea. And while that is undoubted success, his career is also littered with disputes and failure at Turkey, Real Madrid and Real Betis. He was a breath of fresh air at Chelsea and his record is outstanding but has failed to keep himself at the top of the game long enough to create a legacy that his ability deserves.
