Dyer is seen by most as the ultimate sick note. A career plagued by a catalogue of injuries that prevented him from fulfilling his talents. Blessed with extraordinary speed and awareness his performances for Ipswich saw Newcastle shell out £6 million for him. For a few seasons he was a consistent member of the side and broke into the England squad during his time at St James’ Park. But from 2001 onwards the injuries started to mount up and seeing Dyer on the pitch was a rare occurrence. A move to West Ham in 2007 didn’t improve matters and last month he was released. QPR snapped him up but he broke down just two minutes into his debut. Retirement is on the cards for Dyer in the near future.
