Tottenham reportedly have a “long-held interest” in Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, as they look to potentially sign him at the end of this season.
The 24-year-old has matured into such an excellent squad option for his boyhood club, with his form this season arguably meriting more starts than he has been given.
The fact that Jones isn’t a fixture in Liverpool’s strongest starting lineup isn’t ideal for him, however, so there may be a part of him that wonders if he could be a star man elsewhere instead.
Now, according to a new report from The Daily Mail, Spurs retain a “long-held interest” in the midfielder, but the north Londoners are “yet to make that known officially to the Anfield club.”
The update adds that Jones “remains a key player for Arne Slot and has spoken previously about wishing to emulate his idol Steven Gerrard by seeing out his career playing for Liverpool.”
Liverpool shouldn’t sell Jones at any cost
Jones can sometimes split opinion, but his admirers are growing all the time, with his all-round midfield quality increasingly shining through for Liverpool.
He has a 92% pass completion rate in the Premier League this season, and an incredible 94.8% in the Champions League, while Arne Slot lauded his growth as an individual last season:
“Since then [the birth of his child] he has been putting great performances in. In pre-season, I thought he was outstanding and he is outstanding again now. In general, it probably has to do with how the team plays because every player that comes in has a good performance. That says a lot about the quality of the team and how they play together.”
Liverpool shouldn’t be looking to sell Jones for various reasons, whether it be his technical ability, the fact that he knows the club so well, or because the best years of his career should still be ahead of him.
Alexis Mac Allister’s form has been disappointing this season, and there is no guarantee that he will stay for many more years, and his Reds teammate may be eyeing up his starting spot eventually.
Admittedly, Jones would likely be a key starter for Spurs if he did move there, but the hope is that he isn’t even entertaining the idea of leaving the club he has been at since he was a child.
