Trent Alexander-Arnold is leaving Liverpool and as a result is causing a lot of commotion within the fanbase and now, Real Madrid’s insistence that he plays at the Club World Cup is adding an extra layer of awkwardness.

Usually, if a player leaves at the end of their contract, they will play their first game for the club the pre-season immediately following their transfer but Liverpool fans might see Alexander-Arnold player for Madrid this season.

On the 15th of June, the 2025 Club World Cup takes place in the USA and Madrid are taking part.

Liverpool are only legally required to release Alexander-Arnold when his deal expires on June 3o. So, Real Madrid are now hoping to twist Liverpool’s arm by paying a fee but they’re some ways apart on agreement at the moment.

The Times reports between the two clubs began negotiations on Monday, just hours after Alexander-Arnold announced his decision to leave Liverpool on a free transfer when his contract comes to and end.

AS, via 90Min, reports that Real Madrid are willing to offer a “symbolic amount” in the region of €900,000 (£760,000) while also paying for the final month of Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool salary.

In total, this would cost between €1.5-2m (£1.3-1.7m).

What has Trent Alexander-Arnold told Real Madrid about playing at the FIFA Club World Cup this summer?

According to a fresh report from AS, Liverpool and Real Madrid must reach an agreement before the end of May in order for Alexander-Arnold to play at the Club World Cup.

But the player has “the green light to the possibility of playing in the next Club World Cup” with €100million (£84.6m) on offer for the winners but beyond that, they want to unveil him as a new signing at the tournament.

According to AS, “Real Madrid is in talks with Liverpool to try to reach an agreement to release the player at the end of this month.

“For that to happen, they must pay Liverpool the proportional part of the player’s salary (the amount corresponding to the month of June, as it ends on the 30th of that month) and compensate the Reds financially to release him before the end of his contract.”
