A report from Spain claims that Real Madrid’s move to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold for free is 90% done but Liverpool are hedging their bets with a very risky plan if true.
The right-back’s form has become something of a problem for Liverpool with it possible his head is turned by the grandeur of a move to Real Madrid but so too has the silence around his expiring contract.
One of the greatest Liverpool Academy graduates is months away from leaving for free and yet there is very little concrete news about what is happening and why.
It means that reports from abroad are all there is to go on and a report from Spain now claims that Alexander-Arnold’s free-agent move to Madrid is 90% done.
Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid is 90% done but Liverpool are ready to hedge their bets
According to a report from Spanish outlet AS, Real Madrid are of the belief that their move to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold is 90% done but there remains an element of uncertainty that Liverpool are supposedly hoping to take full advantage of.
AS makes the bold claim that Liverpool are hedging their bets on winning the Premier League with the desperate hope that Trent will have a change of heart and decide to stay at Anfield similar to how Steven Gerrard was very close to joining Chelsea in 2005 before deciding to stay.
The club allegedly feels that the scenes of a Premier League title – one the players will able to celebrate after not being able to because of the pandemic – will have an impact on the fullback.
Losing Trent would be a massive blow but Jurgen Klopp’s lesson is important to remember
The 25-year-old has been a phenomenal and perhaps even generational star for Liverpool and losing him would have disastrous results for the way the Reds play but leaving Anfield isn’t always a route to success and glory.
Philippe Coutinho was told by Jurgen Klopp not to leave and his career took a huge detour after leaving Merseyside for Barcelona in 2018.
Klopp told the midfielder: “Stay here and they will end up building a statue in your honour.
“Go somewhere else, to Barcelona, to Bayern Munich, to Real Madrid, and you will be just another player. Here you can be something more.”
To be clear, Alexander-Arnold is world class and leaving Liverpool won’t change that but you lose a lot when you say goodbye to Anfield.
