The last week has seen several reports claim that Liverpool haven’t and won’t offer Luis Diaz a new deal with the inference being that he could be sold this summer but there’s a fresh twist as a new report claims his camp has told Liverpool they want Diaz’s contract sorted out as a priority.

Luis Diaz is having an odd season. He’s not exactly setting the world alight with his performances but he’s not playing poorly either. It may be because he’s out of position, with Arne Slot deploying him as a false nine of sorts, but he hasn’t done brilliantly on the left wing either.

His early season form has just sort of evaporated. It seems bizarre that a player who has one goal in 2025 is also on 16 goals and assists for the season. His dip in form has unfortunately coincided with Darwin Nunez’s total dropoff and niggling injuries to Diogo Jota.

The situation at centre-forward has raised some questions about how Slot should approach the summer transfer window.

On Tuesday, David Lynch reported: “He’s coming up to that point where he’s two years out from the end of his contract.

“There’s big interest in him from clubs in Spain, and you’re in that realm of possibility. Liverpool are not at the point where they’re trying to ship him out, but his future is very much in doubt.

“I don’t necessarily expect that Liverpool will offer him a new contract, and with strong interest from La Liga and Saudi clubs, I wouldn’t be shocked if he moves on.”

According to TBR Football, Liverpool have been informed by Luis Diaz’s representatives that they want his contract discussed for extension soon and to be made a priority.

Liverpool remain intent on extending his terms and although interest from Barcelona is “genuine”, the Reds are said to be “working now to ensure the player extends his stay on Merseyside.”

If Liverpool part ways with Darwin Nunez, they will need to make sure there isn’t too much change upfront and Diaz, who understands the style of play Slot wants to implement, would be a costly loss.

That said, Liverpool need more output from the Colombian and will hope that his goal against Wolves, messy as it was, is the start of Diaz returning to regular scoring and assisting.
