Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton has been linked with a summer move to Lyon, but there has now been a fresh development regarding his future.
The 22-year-old has been mentioned as an option for the Ligue 1 side, with contact reportedly made over a summer switch to the club.
Morton could do with a new challenge at this point in his career, following loan spells in the Championship with Hull City and Blackburn Rovers, with Liverpool possessing too much midfield quality ahead of him.
While a summer exit is still more than possible for the Englishman, a new report from L’Equipe claims that Lyon are stalling in their efforts to sign him ahead of the new season.
While they have an “agreement in place” with Morton, Liverpool are demanding £7.7m for his services, which the French outfit. believe is too high. For that reason, talks are now “not advancing” between the two clubs.
Morton needs to leave Liverpool this summer
While Morton staying at Liverpool this summer would be no real issue for the club, with another loan move likely, it is the right time for him to leave permanently and enjoy the next chapter in his career.
While still clearly a young footballer, he has reached an age where he is mature enough to be a regular starter elsewhere – he is the same age as Florian Wirtz – and Lyon could be great for his development, allowing him to test himself in a foreign league.
Morton is a class act who could be an excellent signing for other team, though, including lower-ranked Premier League sides, with former Hull manager Liam Rosenior showing his admiration for him in the past:
“Some of his play, honestly. He can do everything as a midfield player. When we were recruiting in the summer, he fits completely into the way we want to play.”
In truth, £7.7m is nothing in the modern game for a young midfielder who has played 14 times for Liverpool and represented England’s Under-21s on 13 occasions, so it would be a surprise if a suitor doesn’t come his way, should Lyon pull out of a deal.
