Liverpool have suffered an injury blow regarding midfielder Tyler Morton, with the midfielder now reportedly set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The 22-year-old is absent currently with a shoulder issue, with Arne Slot recently saying he expected him to be out for around four weeks.
Instead, a concerning update has now emerged regarding Morton and his involvement in the remainder of the season, courtesy of The Daily Mail‘s Lewis Steele [via This Is Anfield].
He states that the Englishman may now be absent for as long as three months, having undergone surgery on the problem he first suffered against Southampton back in December.
It is mentioned that Morton may only return to full fitness in the summer, at which point “it is largely expected he will depart” Liverpool and find a new permanent club.
Has Morton played his last game for Liverpool?
Assuming Morton is unavailable for as long as three months, there is every chance that he may even have made his final appearance for Liverpool, considering his return date would be around the middle of May.
At that point, the season will be reaching its conclusion, and even if the Reds have a few games remaining, whether that be in the Premier League or Champions League, the youngster surely wouldn’t be needed.
Regardless of when Morton returns, however, it does make complete sense to move him on permanently, even though Liam Rosenior once hailed him during a loan spell with Hull City, saying:
“Some of his play, honestly. He can do everything as a midfield player. When we were recruiting in the summer, he fits completely into the way we want to play. The beauty with Tyler is he can play deep, and he can be just as effective there, but what we’ve seen in training is he can create and score goals. It was about fitting the functionality of the team around him. He was outstanding.”
It would allow Morton the opportunity to be a regular elsewhere, perhaps in the Championship or a lower-ranked Premier League side, rather than being a bit-part player at Liverpool.
That feels like the best outcome for everyone concerned, and hopefully, the elegant midfielder can build an impressive career for himself in the coming years.
