Rumours linking Virgil van Dijk with an Anfield exit have been branded ‘wide of the mark’ as head coach Andoni Iraola relies heavily on the skipper.
The summer of change at Anfield was fast threatening to become an outright clearing of the decks. With Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson already out the exit door, and Ibrahima Konate having packed his bags for Real Madrid upon the expiry of his contract, a fanbase adjusting to life after Arne Slot could be forgiven for looking at the squad list with a few gaps to fill.
New head coach Andoni Iraola has barely had time to unpack his boxes on Merseyside, yet he has found himself presiding over the most aggressive reshaping of the Liverpool squad in nearly a decade.
When reports emerged from Italy and Turkey linking Galatasaray and AC Milan with a swoop for Virgil van Dijk, the anxiety grew. Rumours spread on Friday that Fenway Sports Group (FSG), while not actively shopping their captain, were suddenly ready to listen to offers for the 34-year-old as he enters the final year of his contract.
Iraola draws a line in the sand
Any suggestions that Liverpool are willing to cash in on their skipper have been firmly dismissed. Iraola has made it abundantly clear that the Dutch colossus remains part of his plans for the 2026/27 campaign.

“The captain is currently enjoying a well-earned post-World Cup break before reporting back to the AXA Training Centre for pre-season duties. While speculation will naturally swirl around a player of his calibre with just 12 months left on his deal, those close to the management structure insist that any talk of an Anfield exit this summer is completely wide of the mark.”

Iraola needs leadership, stability, and elite quality to navigate his transition into the Anfield hotseat. Selling his captain after already losing the talismanic output of Salah and the dressing-room presence of Robertson would have been a step too far.
Van Dijk’s summer has not been without its complications. The defender is recovering from the psychological blow of the Netherlands’ premature World Cup exit, where the Dutch were dumped out on penalties by Morocco in the last-32.
The fallout from that defeat brought a minor injury scare. Former Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman, who resigned in the wake of the tournament exit, revealed why the Liverpool captain didn’t step up to take a spot-kick during the shootout.
“Van Dijk had already indicated during the match, in extra time, that his calf was bothering him badly,” Koeman explained. “[Crysencio] Summerville had a cramp. So ultimately, it came down to who would take the fifth penalty.”
Anfield medical staff will undoubtedly check on the defender upon his return, but there is no long-term panic regarding his fitness for the grueling pre-season schedule ahead.
As things stand at the start of July, Liverpool are refusing to entertain the idea of another high-profile departure. The official stance from the club is that they are not opening the door to an exit, nor are they engaging in any active negotiations
