Wayne Rooney has discussed the ill-timed comments Mohamed Salah has made about Arne Slot, Liverpool FC and his future at the club.

The Egpytian was dropped from the starting lineup for the third game in a row when Leeds United held them to a 3-3 stalemate and although his words may hold truth, the timing was terrible.

Liverpool are in terrible form and are at risk of failing to take anything meaningful from this season, but Salah’s comments risk fracturing the dressing room further than it may already be.

One of the things that Salah said was: “It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.”

True or not, this is not the time to be voicing these issues.

Wayne Rooney says Mo Salah will come to regret his outburst one way or another

Speaking on the BBC podcast on Monday, Rooney said that not only will Salah’s comments have a negative effect on the Liverpool squad but that the former Chelsea star will one day regret speaking out against Slot and the club.

“If I was one of his teammates, I wouldn’t be happy at all with what he said because this is where Liverpool need him most,” he said. “If anything, he has thrown Liverpool under the bus with his words.

“He’s been absolutely incredible for Liverpool, but this was disrespectful to his teammates, manager and fans. I would imagine he will be very quiet around the training ground and that will bring a negative energy in itself to the new players Arne has bedded in.

“I am sure over the next couple of years he will regret saying what he has.”

Liverpool face Inter Milan on Tuesday and despite training with the squad, it’s unclear whether or not Salah will play.

On one hand, leaving him out again might vindicate Salah while on the other hand, restoring him to the team sets a dangerous predecent that players can throw a strop and get their way.

Regardless of how important Salah is, this is now a way bigger issue than it would have been behind closed doors.
