Wayne Rooney has delivered a blunt assessment of Liverpool’s current squad, suggesting that two of their most important senior players are now showing clear signs of decline as the team continues to go through a difficult 2025/26 season.

The former Manchester United striker has been outspoken in recent months about Liverpool’s struggles under Arne Slot, and his latest comments focus on the physical level and long-term trajectory of the club’s established leaders.

Rooney believes that age is beginning to catch up with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and forward Mohamed Salah, arguing that both players are no longer performing at the consistent elite level they previously set at Anfield.

Speaking about Liverpool’s situation, Rooney said: “I said this since the start of the season, age gets to us all and your legs go.”

He added: “I think that’s happened to Salah this season and Van Dijk hasn’t been the same this season.”

Rooney also suggested that their importance within the dressing room may now be having an unintended effect on the wider squad dynamic, with younger players finding it harder to step into leadership roles.

“They are the leaders in the dressing room. It’s hard for the other players to go and leave their mark or become the leaders.”

Concerns over leadership transition at Liverpool

A key theme in Rooney’s analysis is the idea that Liverpool may be struggling to transition leadership within the squad. With long-standing figures still occupying central roles, he believes it can block the emergence of new leaders.

He continued: “I don’t think he will leave but you’ve seen players when they’ve stayed there for too long.”

The comments reflect a broader debate around Liverpool’s squad evolution, particularly as the club moves further into life after their peak under Jurgen Klopp and into a new era under Arne Slot.

Salah and van Dijk remain central figures

Despite Rooney’s criticism, both players remain heavily involved in Liverpool’s plans. Mohamed Salah continues to contribute goals and attacking output, while Virgil van Dijk remains a key defensive organiser and captain.

However, both are in the latter stages of their careers, and discussions around physical decline are becoming more frequent as Liverpool attempt to balance experience with long-term squad renewal.
