Liverpool’s three-match summer tour of the United States came to a painful end in Chicago as a second-half defensive collapse saw Andoni Iraola’s side fall to a 4-2 defeat against Premier League opposition in Leeds United at Soldier Field.
What had looked set to be a routine fixture for the Reds quickly turned into a sobering collapse, with a polar-opposite performance after the interval erasing all the fine work accomplished during an impressive opening half.

Brenden Aaronson started the fightback on the hour mark, taking advantage of a mistake on the edge of the area to finish low past Giorgi Mamardashvili. Eleven minutes later, Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his first of the afternoon, stabbing home at the far post following a flicked-on long throw.
Before Liverpool could regroup, Sean Longstaff made it 3-2 to Leeds in the 73rd minute after punishing another loose ball inside the penalty box. Calvert-Lewin then sealed the outcome five minutes from time, powering home a header from another set-piece delivery to register his brace and round off a frantic four-goal half for his side.

“I think we learn a lot of things. Obviously it’s not the result you want but I think [it was] probably the most useful friendly we played – in a positive way in the first half and in a negative way in the second half. I think we’ve learned a lot from today and I think we can take good conclusions and solve some things.”

The Chicago match drew the curtain on an expansive U.S. tour that saw Liverpool connect with thousands of overseas supporters across three states, following earlier victories against Sunderland and Wrexham.
Looking back at the organisation of the tour and the commitment of the backroom staff, Iraola expressed his gratitude while emphasising that the true test lies ahead when points are on the line.
“You all work very well! At the end, you can see straight away that this is a massive club [with] all the supporters that we have, even overseas. We want to get ready [for] the start of the season – that is when people want to see us play well and get results.”
Liverpool will now head back to the UK to put the finishing touches on their pre-season preparations at AXA Training Centre before the domestic season kicks off.
