If Liverpool sign Alexander Isak this summer, it would be the most decisive transfer the club has made since they paid £75million to sign Virgil van Dijk in 2018.
The club is paying the price for signing Darwin Nunez as they get ready to sell the Uruguayan this summer with the club certain to take a loss on the £85m they paid to Benfica in 2022.
They then tried to sign Moises Caicedo last summer for a reported fee in the region of £11m before Chelsea upped the ante, winning the bidding race at a price of £115m.
Isak will cost interested suitors in the realm of £150m, making him likely to be the most expensive Premier League signing of all time if he remains in England.
Liverpool are the stronest placed club to sign him given their modest spending in recent years and the attraction of being the most likely to challenge for silverware again next season.
That said, Arne Slot’s squad requires a fair amount of work especially given Trent Alexander-Arnold is taking the opportunity to leave for free which means the club must pay out of their pocket to replace him. Even if they recouped £100m from his move to La Liga, Liverpool would have a mammoth job finding a replacement.
While the chances of signing Isak are slim, Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool are intent on signing the striker but it will depend on finances and the timing will have to be perfect.
“The dream for Liverpool is Isak”, says Fabrizio Romano
Newcastle United are fighting to stay in the Premier League top four to ensure they make it into next season’s Champions League in order to convince Isak to stay at St. James’ Park for another year.
If the 25-year-old makes it clear he wants to be sold, the Magpies will demand in the region of £150m and with his contract valid until 2028, there is little room for Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes to work with.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool’s dream is to sign Isak but it may be too complicated this summer.
“It’s still early for this. The dream is Isak but very, very difficult and so it will be seen later this summer, also based on budget,” Romano reports.

Just imagine Salah and Isak together. At that point, it almost doesn’t matter who plays on the left wing – Gakpo or Diaz – goals will be scored.
Combined, the Salah and Isak have 61 goals and 34 assists in the Premier League alone.
Recently, David Ornstein was in awe at the thought of them playing together, saying on The Athletic FC podcast: “It’s scary to think if Liverpool manage to get a goalscorer, what on earth they could do in domestic and European competition.”
