Liverpool could “try to sign” Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi in the January transfer window, according to a new claim from journalist Ian Doyle.

It became clear that the Spaniard was the Reds’ primary choice to come in during the summer, with Arne Slot identifying a new No.6 as a key target after replacing Jurgen Klopp.

In the end, Zubimendi decided to remain at Sociedad, acting as a blow for Liverpool, and the likes of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes decided against signing an alternative.

Speaking in a Blood Red Podcast Q&A [via The Boot Room], however, Doyle claimed that the Reds could go back in for the Spain Euro 2024 winner in January, with the funds available to make a move for him:

“They don’t need loads of players, but we have seen before that if they can add one or two they will spend in January.

“If Zubimendi wants to leave Real Sociedad in January I think Liverpool would try to sign him. We know they have the money there for him, I don’t know what the deal is with the release clause there, £51m is it? If he fancies it, Liverpool quite clearly will go in for him.”

Our thoughts on Doyle’s Zubimendi claim…

Supporters will be buoyed by these comments, at a time when many still want to see a No.6 come in, despite the excellence of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in a double pivot so far this season.

The duo have been largely faultless together, but there is still a feeling that a more defence-minded player in the mould of Zubimendi will be needed against tougher opposition, shielding the defence to perfection.

For that reason, Liverpool should try to snap up the 25-year-old when the January window arrives, looking to strike a deal and potentially beat Manchester City to his services.

The reigning Premier League champions have rather predictably been linked with a move for the Sociedad star, following a season-ending injury to Rodri, so he could have a big decision to make if the Reds come calling, too, weighing up which club would suit him best.
