Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has made a huge claim regarding Liverpool signing a 24-year-old ace to play alongside a current Reds superstar.
For all of Liverpool’s current success on the pitch under Arne Slot, there are lingering concerns over the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.
Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson said that he has been informed that Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi will join Liverpool to play next to Van Dijk, which suggests the latter will stay put:
“You put him alongside Virgil van Dijk, that looks a great partnership doesn’t it. You’re never too old to learn, you never stop learning. So to have to play alongside somebody like van Dijk, to pick up his habits, to learn his communication, to learn the way that his positional sense is, different things.
“He looked good, didn’t he? I thought his passing was really good. You know when you’re fizzing it into the middle and having to get through and break the line. I thought some of his passing was superb. He didn’t have to defend too much, but then you’re on the ball and with possession, you need someone like that.”
As for Van Dijk, at 33, some will lazily want to write him off and claim that he is past his best, but the Dutchman remains as good as ever, averaging 3.7 aerial duel wins per match in the league this season, as well as completing 93.1% of his passes.
Whether Arne Slot sees Guehi as a superior option to Ibrahima Konate alongside him remains to be seen, however, and he would cost a huge amount, with Palace demanding big money from Newcastle United in the summer.
