A worrying update has emerged regarding the fitness of Liverpool right-back Jeremie Frimpong, following an injury picked up in midweek.
The Dutchman has taken his time to settle in a Reds shirt since his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, with injuries not helping him get any real rhythm going.
On Wednesday night, Frimpong limped out of Liverpool’s 5-1 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, being replaced by Conor Bradley before half-time because of a new hamstring issue.
It is a big blow for both the player and the Reds, with Arne Slot desperate to have both him and Bradley available to choose between during a busy run of upcoming fixtures.
Now, a new report from foreign publication Nos claims that Frimpong could potentially be out of international duty for the Netherlands next month, given the severity of the injury.
The 24-year-old isn’t definitely out, but it doesn’t sound too positive, with Slot expected to provide an update in his pre-Brentford press conference on Friday.
A stop-start opening to Frimpong’s Liverpool career
As mentioned, Frimpong hasn’t managed to set the world alight yet at Liverpool, having arrived with a big reputation and being lauded by former teammate Christopher Jullien:
“We know the player and the person that he is outside of football is just something else, like joy, everything that is positive from a player, the energy that he’s bringing. When he was on the field, he was just someone interested in the game, really focusing on the game, working on it. Sometimes he had some little joke, of course.”
Hopefully, Frimpong is only out for a couple of weeks, with Bradley and Dominik Szoboszlai battling for minutes at right-back, but there is no guarantee of that.
If he isn’t back until after the November internationals, it will only hinder Liverpool’s hopes of returning to top form, with his pace down the right flank a potent weapon, as he showed during a promising cameo against Manchester United last weekend.
It will at least give Bradley a chance to find his own top form, following some inconsistent performances this season, as the Reds continue to try and fill the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
