Liverpool are now reportedly “making serious moves” to complete the signing of a “wonderful” player when the January transfer window arrives.

The Reds continue to be linked with a move for Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi, having agonisingly missed out on him on deadline day, with the Eagles holding firm.

It looks as though Liverpool are most likely to return for the 25-year-old at the end of the season, rather than in January, but another Premier League player is reportedly a target midway through the season.

According to Indy Kaila on X, the Premier League are “making serious moves” to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, looking to beat rivals Manchester United to his signature:

“Liverpool making serious moves for Man Utd target Carlos Baleba for January transfer window. Keep an eye on this one.”

Do Liverpool need to sign Baleba in January?

Baleba is a hugely impressive young player, so the idea of Liverpool snapping him up in January makes complete sense, with Alan Shearer saying of him:

“He was absolutely wonderful. He changed the tempo and performance on the front foot and defensively. They got the three points which they deserved.”

That said, Liverpool do feel well-stocked in midfield areas, so Baleba would have to accept that he has to bide his time to become a regular, rather than be a key starter for Brighton on a regular basis.

At just 21 years of age, he is still maturing as a footballer, but given his long-term ceiling, it is only natural that the Reds consider him a strong option to come in.

Meanwhile, there is also an argument to say that Palace ace Adam Wharton is just as good a choice for Liverpool next summer, having also been linked with a move to Anfield.

Reds supporters are likely to be split when it comes to who they would like to see come in out of the pair, but either way, one of them should be considered a priority addition, ensuring that there is a fantastic long-term option to dictate matters in the middle of the park for years to come.
