Xabi Alonso is reportedly stalling on initial contacts from Chelsea in the hopes that Liverpool come calling amid Arne Slot’s uncertain future at Anfield.

Many reliable outlets and journalists have reported that Slot will not be relieved of his role at Liverpool, yet the speculation continues.

The Dutchman has, by and large, failed this season, although ‘mitigating circumstances’ have been cited as the reason why FSG have not sacked him.

Miguel Delaney reports: Liverpool have no current plans to move on Arne Slot in the summer, with the hierarchy believing there are numerous mitigating factors for a disappointing campaign.”

Liverpool have lost 19 games in all competitions this season, a joint-record low shared with Brendan Rodgers, who was fired just months after FSG kept faith with the Northern Irishman in 2016.

Now, it appears as though Alonos is unwilling to commit his future elsewhere amid hopes that Liverpool will part ways with Slot, according to new reports.

Xabi Alonso yet to make a decision on his future – said to be waiting for Liverpool

According to a report from Pete Hall, writing for iNews, “Chelsea want Xabi Alonso as their next manager, but the Spaniard is yet to make a decision in case his preferred destination becomes available.”

Hall goes on to report that “Chelsea and Alonso’s representatives have been in contact for weeks.” Yet, the Spaniard is yet to give the Blues any indication that he will take the position.

The former Liverpool midfielder is said to be keen to return to management, but a source has informed iNews that Alonso would have “taken the Chelsea job by now if Liverpool was not still in his thinking.”

Danny Murphy believes that “Slot’s time is probably up”, but for now, that’s just his opinion.

Liverpool are in a worrying position

It’s more than understandable that fans are concerned. The performance on the pitch has been concerning, but things off the pitch seem just as worrying.

Mohamed Salah is leaving the club in the summer with his damning interview in December now seemingly symptomatic of a much larger problem at the club. There appears to be very little leadership from Slot to the very top of the club’s hierarchy.

While recent reports suggest sporting director Richard Hughes will not leave this summer, neither he nor CEO of Football Michael Edwards are showing much in the way of clinical decision-making. The 2025 summer transfer window, which saw an outlay of £460m, imbalanced a team that was fresh off a Premier League title triumph.

Even though Slot cannot be blamed for this, his management of the players in his squad – from inadequate fitness to disparaging comments to the press – has left much to be desired.

Unfortunately, even if Slot is replaced by Alonso, there appears to be a lot more damage done than a single transfer window could fix.
