Reds’ Aussie stopper signs new deal

|

Liverpool’s Australian goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis has signed a new two year deal that will keep him at Anfield until June 2012.  He was described back when he was signed in 2007 as the best keeper in the world at his age group and the 19 year old is seen as a hot property back in his native Australia. He has been on loan at League Two side Accrington Stanley this season and has played 14 games during the spell that lasted from November until the end of the season. It is seen as part of a learning process that will develop his game into becoming a top goalkeeper. Bouzanis said of his time with Accrington:

“It’s different in the lower leagues because it’s a lot more physical and that’s tested my high ball game whereas in the Premier League it is a lot more technical and a lot quicker. When I first came down I found the physical side a little bit difficult and that’s something I’ve had to adapt to. The first thing the goalkeeper said to me was that it was a good learning curve to see how physical the game is and to play with men.”

The loan move was certainly a challenge for Bouzanis and he had to compete for a first team spot with Ian Dunbavin. Injuries, some individual errors and a lack of game time may have made it a difficult move for the young Australian but his new contract shows the faith the Liverpool coaching staff have in him and he will most likely go out on loan next season too.
