Lawrenson: “One swallow doesn’t make a summer but . . .”

|

In his column in the Liverpool Daily Post, former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson believes Liverpool’s win against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend could be the start of a turnaround in fortunes for Roy Hodgson’s side:

“Liverpool’s recent plight has been compared to that of a sick person but at least the patient took a step in the right direction when it came to the road to recovery on Sunday. One swallow doesn’t make a summer but the Blackburn game was all about the result for Liverpool and they achieved that elusive first Premier League victory since August. When you’ve been on a bad run like that and not playing well, it’s all about just getting over the line. To be fair to the side they committed more men forward and were a much more attacking outfit. Liverpool could have and should have won more easily and a two or three goal margin would not have flattered them.”

Lawrenson is hopeful that Fernando Torres’s goal will do the Spanish striker a world of good:

“A goal for Fernando Torres was also of great importance as that’s what he’s paid to do. You could see straight away that he was lifted and the pressure was instantly lifted off him. Also, it was a well-taken finish and he looked quite sharp for the rest of the afternoon.”
