Why I’m glad to see us linked with this TYPE of striker

|

Since the close of the transfer window, Liverpool have inevitably been linked with what feels like every striker in Europe. Roy Hodgson has made it no secret that his top priority is to attain the services of a new front man to help share the goal scoring burden currently resting on Fernando Torres. One thing I’ve noticed about the strikers we’ve been linked with is that the majority of them are known to be good in the air and have a physical presence.

Players like Mario Gomez, Ola Toivonen and Pavel Pogrebnyak are known for their big frames and for being very dangerous in the air, which is exactly what we need in our attacking department. You only have to look at the example set by probably our best player in October, Sotirios Kyrgiakos. Everyone knows he’s not the most technically gifted footballer but the havoc he’s created at set pieces for us recently has rightfully elevated him into the first team. The big Greek has somehow managed to take us from being hugely ineffective at corners to looking very threatening at set-pieces. It has got to the point where Steven Gerrard now aims for Soto every time he takes a long free-kick or corner and most of the time he succeeds in creating some distress for the opposition defence.

What Kyrgiakos has proved is how important it is sometimes to have physical players with an effective aerial presence in a team, especially in English football. The problem with our squad though is that at set pieces we are relying on one defender to be our main goal threat. Having a forward with some of Kyrgiakos’ abilities would hugely benefit the team and would give us a second option to aim for on corners. If you look at Chelsea for example, their squad is packed with big, strong players and they always look very likely to score every time they earn a corner.

Great point. And I don’t think theres any debate that its that type Roy’s looking for. But we also want a quality goal threat as well. Llorente is every LFC fans dream.

Yes they are what we need but some wingers that can cross are needed to compliment them.

Fingers crossed for this one! You’re absolutely bang on regarding the impact of Soto with Stevie’s delivery a few more of similar stature with Llorente’s quality could only add more dimensions to our attack. It feels as if having options up front is a luxury we’ve not enjoyed since Crouch left. As for the post regarding a rooney or tevez like player why can’t we have both? Its been long established that to win a league your best chances are with four varying types of quality striker.

    Bring on January!!!!!!!

Yeha sure, bring on another gun striker, to sit in the box like our current one and twiddle his thumbs. A striker is useless if he has no service. You can have Ten Torres sitting up in the box it wont make a lick of difference.
First and foremost we need to get rid of Roy asap, or there will be no quality sognongs for us if he is still here. Who in their right mind would sign for a club who has an inept senile old fart as their manager????
Then look at wingers, Then a striker and possibly a left back… ,
