Who is this French winger? A target for Liverpool FC

|

A couple of weeks ago, Rennes attacking midfielder Sylvain Marveaux was spotted in the director’s box at Anfield for Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves. The 24 year old’s contract is up at the end of the season and Rennes are resigned to losing the player. General Manager Pierre Dreossi said today:

“We met Sylvain twice and I will meet him again, but I don’t think he wants to stay at Rennes. He would have played only five or six more games for Rennes this term, that’s all.”

Whether he joins for a small fee during this transfer window or on a Bosman free transfer at the end of the season, a move for Marveaux by Liverpool is a strong possibility, but what do we know about the player?

Marveaux was born in Vannes, Britanny and became involved in his first club AS Menimur at the age of just 6. After 7 years, he moved to the city’s biggest club Vannes OC and was selected for the prestigious Pole Espoirs Football de Ploufragan regional football academy where he learned his trade. After leaving the academy he signed a youth contract with Britanny side Rennes in 2001 and spent four years in the club’s well regarded youth academy.

At reserve level, he impressed for Rennes in the 2005/06 season and playing in the CFA league, he scored seven goals in 21 appearances, standing out as the team’s star player. His impressive performances earned him a professional contract in the summer of 2006 and he became part of Guy Lacombe first team plans. Marveaux initially struggled to gain a regular place under Lacombe despite making his debut on the opening day of the season in a 2-1 defeat to Lille.

Sounds like a very injury-prone player and I think we have enough of them already. It also would be nice to get some out-and-out wingers instead of someone who can player wide too.

I watched them play on and definitely do not like me, but according to what I read,
liverpool would pay about £ 3m, we could buy it and sell it for a
higher price, as probably happens with Jovanovic, who was a player
free and could win a £ 5m sold him
