Borrell: “It’s too soon to think this player is a star”

|

Liverpool U18 coach Rodolfo Borrell has played down expectations after Raheem Sterling scored 5 goals for the Reds in 9-0 win over Southend in the FA Youth Cup. He told Liverpoolfc.tv:

“To score goals is massive for any player and he is a player with a lot of potential, everybody can see this, but I think it’s time for him to have even more humility and work hard at the defensive side of his game and the things he’s not so good at. Don’t forget he is an U16 player and that’s what makes the performance even more impressive but we must protect this player and it’s too soon to think this player is a star.”

Borrell was delighted with the all round performance of the players:

“I am really pleased with the performance of the lads, especially with it being at Anfield. I was expecting a tough game because Southend have some good players, but we started really well and with the goals we scored so quickly it made it easier for us. The clean sheet was important and I told the players this at half-time. I still think we can play a little bit better linking more with the central midfielders but I’m quite happy with our overall display. I’m sure Southend will bounce back from this and they kept going and I would like to wish them all the best.”
