Bet on Carroll to score his first goal for England at 7/4!

|

Liverpool’s Andy Carroll goes into tonight’s match between England and Ghana expecting to start as a lone striker. With it being only his second match for England, you’d expect pressure to be off the 22 year old to perform, but with high expectations, after his £35million from Newcastle, Carroll will be hoping to score his first goal for his country in only his second cap.

It has been a remarkable rise for Carroll who only three years ago was sent out on loan at Preston North End in the Championship. He had already won the “Wor Jackie Milburn Trophy,” back in 2007, a trophy awarded to the rising star of North East football nominated by Newcastle players, and was sent out on loan to Preston for some first team experience. After a six month spell and one league goal against Leicester City, he returned to the North East.

He didn’t feature for the Toon Army for the rest of the 2007/08 season and only made his league debut for the Magpies against Manchester City in October 2008, coming on as a substitute. It didn’t take him long to get his first goal though, and on his first start for the club in January 2009, he hit the back of the net with a trademark header in a 2-2 draw with West Ham.

He was yet to become a first team regular but more opportunities arose when Newcastle got relegated to the Championship. The departures of strikers Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins, meant that manager Chris Hughton became more reliant on Carroll, and he started the young Geordie alongside either Shola Ameobi or Peter Lovenkrands up front. It was very clear early on that the Magpies had a talent on their hands with his powerful play, strong left foot and unequalled strength in the air.

Carroll went on to score 17 league goals as Newcastle were promoted from the Championship and for the start of the 2010/11 season, Carroll was handed the famed number 9 shirt for his first full campaign in the Premier League. He would not disappoint in the jersey as he made an impressive start to the season, scoring 11 league goals and earning his first England cap in the friendly against France back in November.

After his £35million move to Liverpool in January, a lot has been expected of him, and although Reds fans have had to wait a while because of a thigh injury, he has started Liverpool’s last two matches and hopefully he can continue his return to fitness against Ghana tonight. Hopefully Carroll doesn’t sustain an injury during the match but he should cause the Ghanaian defence a few problems tonight.

Although England go into the friendly with 5 first choice players sent home to recover for upcoming club fixtures, the presence of players such as Carroll, club mate Glen Johnson, as well as Jack Wilshere should give England enough to compete against the World Cup quarter finalists. Prediction: England 2 – 1 Ghana.
