What a difference a year makes on the ownership front

|

Ever since the arrival of Fenway Sports Group, formally known as New England Sports Ventures, things have felt very different. At first, Liverpool fans were apprehensive, and rightly so after seeing the state in which the previous American owners had left the club in. However, it wasn’t long before us fans started to realise that our new owners were a lot more committed than Messrs Hicks and Gillett.

Over the course of their three-year reign as owners, Hicks and Gillett spent a net total of just over £27 million on transfers. Already this summer we have seen FSG give the go-ahead for Kenny Dalglish to splash £47 million on just three players; Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, Charlie Adam from Blackpool and Stewart Downing from Aston Villa with Alexander Doni coming in on a free transfer from AS Roma. Only approximately £2.5 million of that has been recouped from the sales of Paul Konchesky and Gerardo Bruna to Leicester City and Blackpool respectively.

This fact alone shows that our current owners are more than willing to show their commitment to the club and that they are determined to make good the promises they made to the fans when they completed their takeover; unlike Hicks and Gillett, who promised so much and gave so little.

No longer do the supporters or the management have to worry about money problems or budget restraints. All significant debt has been wiped and the freedom this has provided has given our manager the chance to bring the best available players into the club in order to bring back the former glories our fans so sorely miss.

Switch your minds back to twelve months ago and last summer’s transfer window. About £25 million was spent on eight players. Those eight players were Jonjo Shelvey, Milan Jovanovic, Joe Cole, Danny Wilson, Christian Poulsen, Brad Jones, Raul Meireles and Paul Konchesky. With the exception of Raul Meireles, how many of them players can any Liverpool fan honestly say made a positive impact during last season?

On the same manner should liverpool offload these guys no matter what price any club’s willing to pay on their behalf. At worse, the ones that where unable to be sold should be loaned. As a fan, their presence in the club is nauseatious.
