How the Reds Could Cut Costs Significantly

A quick thought: When I look at the current squad I am astonished at the amount of poor and inadequate players that grace the registration book within the Anfield walls.

Poulsen, Ngog, Jovanovic, Insua, Degen, El Zhar, Darby (why loan him, it is clear he will never make the first team), Eccleston, Kyrgiakos, Spearing, Wilson, Jones, Maxi, Ayala, Gulacsi, Hansen, Mendy, Mavinga.

These all contribute to what is one of the top 3 wage bills in the Premiership (according to Deloitte).

If only the above mentioned players were sold or released we would reduce our annual wage bill by about £40 million. That’s an average of about £40,000 a week per player and none of them would have to be replaced.

Liverpool currently have 49 players registered with a squad number and when you consider that Aquilani, Degen, Jovanovic, Insua, Doni and El Zhar have not even been given squad numbers as yet it is mind boggling to think what are actual wage bill is.

With the big money signings we have made (Adam, Henderson, Carroll, Suarez and Downing) you can pretty much guarantee not one of them will be on less than £70,000 a week. Just getting rid of the dead wood that are not good enough to lace the boots of some of our players let alone pull the shirt on come match day would help to make the books look alot healthier.

While I understand that there will no doubt be comings and goings over the next few weeks, I will stick my neck on the line to say that I bet that no more than 5 of the above list will be off the LFC player register. Most will be loaned out with us paying the greater percentage of their wages.

Maxi, Wilson and Spearing do not have to be offloaded at this moment so dont need to mention them in the list. Wilson is still learning. Spearing mediocre but just got a new contract somehow and Maxi is a good squad player but should be shipped out next year.

Gulacsi is a great young goalkeeper. Not need to ship him out. And isnt Mavinga already sold? Eccleston might have potential. Best to loan him out.

I just hope we can get rid of Poulsen, Degen, Jovanovic and El Zhar.

    What an amazingly optimistic article!

The Twit who wrote this article knows nothing about liverpool football club or about football in general.

most of those players are good prospects and good players in general.

Yes there are some players we need to get rid of but Eccleston, Spearing, Wilson, Maxi & Gulacsi are not those players. The rest need to go though.

Poulsen – I agree, let him go.
Ngog – I agree we should let him leave, he’s not progressing as much as he should but we may want to replace him with another tall, back up forward in case Carroll is injured
Jovanovic – I agree, let him go (aren’t his wages something in the region of £120,000 a week?)
Insua – I would like to see what the loan spell has done for him. Also he would need to be replaced as the only other left back we have is Aurelio and he’s injured all the time
Degen – I agree, let him go.
El Zhar – I agree he won’t need to be replaced however he did show some promise that he could develop, maybe not to regular first team but i would think he could become a decent back up player
Darby – I’ve only seen him in pre-season games so the standard wouldn’t be worth commenting on
Eccleston – Shows good promise I don’t think we should sell just yet
Kyrgiakos – Always useful to have an experianced back up defender if only to give advice to the youngsters in training
Spearing – Seemed to have stalled in his development however showed towards the end of last season that with Kenny’s advice he’s getting back to it
Wilson – Still only 19 and hasn’t been used as a centre back (his position) as much as a left back
Jones – With the purchase of Doni i think it’s clear Jones could already be on the way out
Maxi – A useful player who can fight for a place on the wing with Downing and Kuyt no point in selling now that we have 1 player for the right and 1 for the left – we need strength in depth and we have no other wingers
Ayala – showed some promise and the years loan may have done some good too soon to sell
Gulacsi – promising young keeper don’t sell
Hansen – not sure how useful it is to have 4 keepers in the first team however with Gulacsi on loan again this season should Reina or Doni get injured we’d need a sub keeper
Mendy – I’ve never seen him play if i rememeber correctly
Mavinga – hasn’t he already been sold to Rennes?

ourkop shows its lack of knowledge and L4L is even worse for republishing.

It’s clear this was written by some passer by.

started to read the list and came to understand how flawed the argument is so stopped after a few names. I don’t think you have a good enough knowledge of all the players you mentioned and therefore cannot see the relevance of any argument you might raise 🙁 I think you need to provide an detailed analysis of each player so that I for one might take you a little more seriously.

That site is rubbish, why on earth have you struck up a partnership? Please don’t reprint their drivel it’s very poorly researched.

  • Dev Prasad says:

I agree with most of the names listed on this list, BUT, as many mentioned above, some of the players need to be retained. Missing from the list is Joe Cole. Didnt see any promise is J. Cole during his stint in China and Malaysia.

Andre Wisdom looked really good in China but was not fielded in Malaysia.

Jovanovic needs to go as he’s over paid and not utilized at all.

N’gog may not be a world class striker, but he’s the only out and out striker we have other than Carrol. The rest are forwards and not strikers.

Ayala, Insua, Degen, Darby and Wilson lacked a bit of maturity but am sure they will blossom in no time as they can only get better with more exposure.

Maxi and Kyrgiakos are excellent covers. Doubt any players slightly better than these two would mind being on the bench as often and would demand more first team football. DONT let go of these two!

Am happy we’re not in Europe. This season we build a fort and then we go to war. Without building a formidable team, we wont be able to sustain a full season competing in League, FA Cup, League cup and Europe. We are in midst of building a big enough squad!
